I'm Still Here, Just Stubborn I Guess...

Hello all,
As the title indicates, I'm still hanging around here. Not as much that's true, but I still like popping back here every now and then. It's like slipping on an old pair of comfy slippers, y'know? Anyway, I've been working my tail off, which means less writing time. That's kind of fine, as my muse has gone AWOL for what seems like forever now. I am intrigued by Supergirl, my newest fandom because I'm a tramp that way, and I'm hoping it will be a chance to get back into the fanfic writing saddle. We will see.

I have been taking night classes, working towards a certificate in Web Design at a local college. I'm really liking it, the latest class is all about learning to make your own themes for WordPress. This is also relevant, as we are redoing my work website and am part of the team working on the transition from the old boring site to a new internally managed WordPress site. If that was all I did at work I'd be thrilled, but sadly it is only a small part of my day to day job. Sigh.

However it has shown me I think the direction I want to head in, so we shall see if it turns into something I do more of down the road. In the meantime, work is paying for about half of my classes, so that is great. I still like working there although I do find it a bit stressful.

Tomorrow Jo and I and Jo's mum are heading off to a matinee performance of the Toronto Symphony. They will be doing the music from John Williams, so I'm sure I will be humming the Star Wars theme most of the evening, lol! My birthday is on the 21st and I am leaning towards getting my friends together and doing some lazer tag, because yes I am a 12 year old trapped in a 48 year old's body. Nothing says Happy Birthday like shooting your friends in the back I say. My code name is "Old Lady" mainly because I love hearing the kids say "Oh man, I just got hit by an Old Lady!" It's the little things in life, right?

Hope all is good where you are.

Supercat fanfic coming soon (fingers crossed!)

New Fandom, thank God!

So, SuperCat!

Yes, a new fandom for me to play in. Supergirl is light and fluffy and lots of pretty everywhere. And then there's the subtext between Supergirl/Kara Danvers and Cat Grant. Probably because the show is using superhero tropes with those two characters and it sucks you in. However I'm loving it. And even better, it is wooing my muse out of hiding. At least, I think it is. I've been tinkering at least, not at all happy with the tinkering yet, but at least there are words going down on pages again. *happy dance* And the previews of Mondays upcoming episode, with Dark!Kara...just holy crap! I'm trying to not get too excited but...holy crap!

Supergirl was also just renewed for a second season, so yay! I hate it when a fandom is cancelled after 1 season. I'm happy to see familiar fanfic authors already writing in the fandom. Here's hoping I stay inspired, you may actually see some fanfic!

Just rambling...

Wow, are my writing muscles rusty! I've been struggling with a Swan Queen fic for my OnceUponaLand challenge and although I finished it, I'm not sure if it really conveys what I wanted it to. *pout* I guess that's what I get for not keeping up with the old muse. I read that Incandescent Fire almost shut down (thats a board community for Otalia if you are unaware) but they found some good hearted folks to take it over. I have several unfinished fics there as well. *shakes head* I wonder sometimes if the reason I'm not as productive is that there is less and less interactivity with readers. I go on tumblr or AO3 and it's like sending a fic out into a black hole, not sure if anyone has read it or liked it. Well, that's a lie, I do get kudos, but it's not the same as it used to be here or how it was on IF, where readers would actually say something to you. Likes and kudos aren't the same. Don't get me wrong, they are still nice. On IF I can at least see how many hits my post gets, which is rather satisfying too.

So while the writing has declined, the other art forms are exploding. Maybe that's the price. The writing muse must sit while the other muses are playing. I don't know. I guess I'd just like to do it all, lol. Ok, time to stop whining and I need to get back to work on my latest stained glass piece. I'll post some pics soon, so you can all see it too.

Edit Dec 27/15: Be careful what you ask for. I've had plenty of comments on this fic over on AO3, a few critical of it, lol! Figures right? Ah well, plenty of hits and kudos on it too. That's what I get for whining.

Chapter 14Collapse )
So I'm back with some background on what the heck happened on the job front with me. Last year at around this time, the club I worked for had yet another new General Manager come in, the 4th in like four years! And while she had club experience, she didn't have general manager experience. Still I liked her and she seemed to settle in okay. Eventually an Executive Assistant position was posted, taking some responsibilities from my position and adding others. Feeling like a natural fit for the job, I applied. Brand spanking new GM and veteran Club membership assistant who knew all the players in the game, made perfect sense to me and my co-workers. And then I waited. And waited. And WAITED. Eventually year end came and went and October rolled around and a series of events began to unfold. My collegue (and mentor if you will), the membership manager (but not my direct supervisor) was suddenly let go. The minute that happened I knew that I did not get the EA job, I was too valuable in my current position. They hired a replacement for the membership manager who started the next week, and asked me to help her (read train her, because no one else knew the job). The week after that the new EA started, and asked me to help her (read train her as well).
So there sat an unappreciated and stressed out Geek, sad at losing the guy she could go to to bounce stuff off of and stuck training 2 people. And more and more work piled up on my desk, as I was increasing given things to help fill in the cracks. I was pretty miserable.

The EA position took some of my extra work that I had been doing around the Club, taking minutes for other committees outside of my own department, that I had been doing as a part time job to make ends meet. With that gone as well I had no other options but to start to look for a second job.

And then it dawned on me. I could work my butt off at 2 jobs or I could try to find 1 job that paid more. So that's what I did.
Within a week of not getting the EA job a friend emailed me a job posting, saying that she thought I'd be perfect for this new job. So I applied, and my new employers thought I was perfect for the job too. I now work for a faith based organization, I started in January. There was plenty of drama with the new EA before I left as well, which I will share on another day. Needless to say they eventually let her go and hired a second EA, who just quit last week my friends informed me. I feel bad for my friends but inside it makes me smile. And if they offered me the job today, I'd be tempted but I know I would say no thanks. The stress that lifted from me was incredible, and I didn't even realize how much it was bothering me until it was gone.

The transition to the new position went pretty smoothly. The girl I replaced sits across from me in the main room where you come into the office. The work is actually fairly similar, I work with committees, I give great customer service, I answer questions by email and phone as quickly as I can and I file stuff. In fact I have less filing now than I used to. The hard part now is learning the lingo, kind of like being a medical assistant or a legal assistant, there are terms and ways of doing things that are specific to the job. They also warned me when I was hired that there could be a shake up in organization over the next few years, but honestly, there is no such thing as job security these days, so hell yes I took the job. My probation period ended in June and I had a nice salary bump up. I work 10 minute drive from my home. And I was sitting at my desk the other day and realized that I kind of like meetings where people start by singing a song together.

Change is difficult and sucks but in this case it really was for the best.

Check in - So how the hell are you?

Is there anyone out there still? It seems like forever since I've wandered around LJ which is a shame. I've been going through some major changes at work and that has been taking up a lot of my free time. I've changed workplaces, going from the private club industry and moving into a faith based organization. However, just as working for a private club did not make me a wealthy person, so too working for a religious organization does not make me super churchy either, lol! It's interesting how people react to me now when I say that I work for this place, like I'm going to go all bible thumper on them or something. Yeah, not at all, lol! It is a super liberal workplace, I am completely out at work and Jo is even on my insurance policy. In fact several of my co-workers are gay, including the big boss. It's an admin assistant job but I also work on a newsletter that is sent out every month or so which is a lot of fun for me. There is a lot more email to respond to and I don't have my own office anymore, actually I am the first person you meet when you come into the office space. This means that I am busier and in a shared space, so I don't work on my writing at work anymore. I have to say, I liked my last job but didn't realize how much stress I was under until I left. It was like a weight lifted off of me. I'll catch you up on the drama that happened at the old job in another post. So, long story short, I'm really enjoying the new job.

Needless to say, with all the crap going on over the fall and the new job starting in January, my writing has suffered I suppose and I feel very rusty now. The good news is that I have had a creative rush on the drawing side of things, partly because of a new co-worker who turned me on to Zentangle. I'll warn you now, it's addictive, lol! I highly recommend you check it out, if you have never heard of it before. It's particularly satisfying for those of you out there who think you can't draw. Maybe I'll post some of what I've been working on for you all to check out. I mentioned to a friend lately that this is the first time in a long time that I'm doing some artwork for myself. Normally I do artwork for someone else, a painted backdrop for a play, a poster for an event, things like that. I've got a zentangle journal going, where I am using quotes that I like and doing a design around it. It's just for me, a place to practice new patterns, figure out what I like and don't like, a new place to just play. It is very relaxing too, I try to do it before bed to get me off electronic devices and clear the mind, hence the "zen" part of zentangle.

So, what's next? Well, we'll see if the old writing muse wants to come out and play again too.
Hope to check in with you again soon.

Slow News Day

Title: Slow News Day

Fandom: Once Upon A Time
Pairing: Swan Queen

AN: The story is written for Onceuponaland challenge, using an original character in a story. Diane/Artimis is an original character was by confessoralana

“Oh, God. Not again,” Emma Swan grumbled under her breath as she stepped out of the cruiser and refrained from rolling her eyes.

“Emma, be nice. You remember what happened last time,” David said softly, a fake smile coming to his lips as he met his daughter’s eyes. It had taken him days to talk Snow down, assuring her that Emma was perfectly safe despite the write up and photo evidence in the local paper of their daughter singed and smoking after rescuing a so called "firebreathing dragon" hatchling, that instead was simply a poor cat stuck half way down Old Mother Hubbard's fireplace chimney. Still, it made for a fun feel good news story, albeit embarrassing, by their resident intrepid reporter. The same resident reporter bearing down on them as quickly as possible without breaking a heel.

“Sheriff Swan! Sheriff Swan!” The thin elegant woman called out, getting her attention before dashing down the sidewalk looking both ways before scampering across the street to catch up to the two Storybrooke police officials making their way to the local high school.

“Diane, I don’t have time for this right now,” Emma moved away, hoping that the nosey reporter took the not at all subtle hint and would leave them be. “Surely there has to be something more interesting than the Lost Boys latest vandalism escapade for you to investigate.”

“The police and crime beat may not be the busiest section of the Mirror, Sheriff, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t something here to report.” The woman smiled winningly and flicked back her shoulder length light brown hair.

The truth was it was a slow news day and the Lost Boys were the last thing on Diane’s mind, if indeed they had anything at all to do with it, which she highly doubted. In fact the bizarrely scrawled pentagram shaped markings on the side of the high school wall that had just been described over the police radio frequency she scanned on a regular basis certainly screamed that this was not a normal case at all. And then there was the trail of glowing orange ooze that went out of the yard, through the school baseball field and disappeared into the nearby woods. None of it made sense and while she was unsure about how to figure it all out, the intrepid reporter was determined to get to the bottom of it.

The one thing Diane did know for sure was that where Sheriff Swan went, very often trouble followed. And that meant a great news day. Like it or not, she would follow this case to the end. If that meant using everything at her disposal, then so be it. Diane stepped closer and spoke quietly with the reluctant Sheriff.

“Perhaps those photos I have of a certain blonde intruder making out with my next door neighbour, the town’s former mayor would make for an interesting piece, on a slow news day…” Diane let the sentence dangle in the tense air between them. It was really so tacky to stoop to this level, but if it got her the story then it would be worth it. Besides it was always fun to tweak the Saviour.

“Fuck.” Emma growled under her breath and glared at the woman. She should have just let Regina use her damn cloaking spell that night like she had wanted and been done with it. That had been a pretty hot rendezvous, so she couldn’t begrudge the interlude, however she was not only embarrassed at being caught, but she was being manipulated with the information.

David covered his smile just barely in time before turning and dashing up the high school steps and pulling open the door for the two ladies.

“Fine.” Emma leaned closer to the woman to make her point. “But this is the last time you pull that blackmail stunt with me, or so help me God, I will rat you out to said former mayor. You know, your neighbour. The former Evil Queen, destroyer of nations.”

“I think that might have been Xena,” Diane patted the Sheriff’s arm and cocked an eyebrow.

“You know what I mean.” Emma ground out, not really wanting to bring her lover into this. There would be hell to pay on many fronts if Regina did find out that people knew that they were together. Having it splashed across the Mirror would not be a good thing at all.

“Of course, Sheriff.” Diane said, smirking to herself as she made her way up the steps and passed through the open door. She had pushed the limit this time, but she was sure it would be worth it. Diane glanced into sparkling blue eyes and grinned up at the man holding the door open for her. “Thanks, Charming.”

“Pleasure as always, Artemis.” He smiled, waiting for his daughter to follow the determined reporter into the school.

“Not a word.” Emma stalked past him, fuming silently at how much pleasure he was getting at her expense.

“Never.” David chuckled under his breath and followed his daughter inside the high school, knowing that the days adventure was likely just beginning. Suddenly there was a great rumbling from under foot and the three exchanged very worried looks.

So much for a slow news day.

AN: Written for Onceuponaland challenge Promptly in Order, to write a fic to include using words provided and you must use them in the order provided.
Prompt word list: doctor, apple light

“Maybe we should go see the doctor.” Emma said softly, checking the thermometer before glancing down at the grumbling mound of blankets piled in the center of the bed. A tousled dark head popped up and glared back at her, grumpy from her fever.

“That quack?” Regina grumped, digging for a tissue under her pillow before wiping at her running nose. “I’d rather take my chances with your mother’s quaint home remedies then let Whale anywhere near me.” She blew her nose loudly and flopped back down under the comforter once more, miserable.

Emma sighed but couldn’t disagree. She didn’t trust Whale much either. She could never remember if it was starve a cold and feed a fever or the other way around, but Snow’s pot of chicken soup was certainly worth having regardless. Emma was a little more leery about the slathering of Regina’s chest in mustard or eating a clove of garlic. At the very least she should get some fluids into her restless patient.

“Alright then, how about some orange juice and a book to read to pass the time.” Emma said gently, hoping that might settle her lover. The blanket was quickly flattened and Regina just frowned up at her, before cocking an eyebrow.

“Ok, so let’s make that apple juice instead,” Emma said putting the thermometer down on the nightstand. “It’s almost as great a source of vitamin C, or at least that’s what Henry said.” Emma glanced down at the shiny dark eyes staring up at her, bright from sickness but at least not pissed off at her at the moment. Emma smiled softly, unable to stop herself she reached out to press her hand to the flushed forehead, checking how hot it was to the touch. Regina’s eyes fluttered shut at the gentle touch, her head turning towards her, sighing softly. Emma brushed back some dark strands of hair clinging to the damp skin, before threading her fingers through the thick locks. Regina almost purred with pleasure.

“Better yet, why don’t I turn off the light and just snuggle down in bed with you?” Emma said softly, as Regina’s eyes opened wide as if disbelieving. After all this time together, Regina could still be stunned to find Emma at her side, standing there through thick and thin, caring for her in sickness and in health. They had never officially exchanged the vows; they had never felt the need to. It was just the way it was, for better or worse.

Regina nodded, her eyes big and fragile, saying so much more than words ever could. She sniffed and shifted over, pleased as Emma slid in beside her and flicked off the lamp on the nightstand. Emma pulled her close and Regina seemed to settle right down. Emma smiled as she sensed Regina finally fall asleep. Emma shook her head, as she should have realized it sooner. After all, true love was always the best medicine.
